The United States reported almost 1,500 COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, making it the deadliest day of the American summer so far and the country’s worst tally since May.Data from Johns Hopkins University said 1,499 additional deaths were recorded alongside 55,910 new confirmed cases of the virus.
More than 167,000 people have died due to the coronavirus pandemic in the US since the start of the crisis.
The average number of deaths over a seven-day period has been above 1,000 in the US for 17 consecutive days now, with the situation in southern states seeming to drive the rise.
The state of Georgia reported 105 deaths on Wednesday, with North Carolina and Texas recording 45 and 324 new deaths respectively.
